Where the Wild Things Are (2.5/5)

Before I start this review, I want to say that I don’t remember reading the book as a child, so I can’t compare them.

The basic premise is that this little boy named Max is sad at home, so he runs off and finds an island with these creatures.  He becomes their king, and tried to “keep the sadness out.”  Personally, I did not like the film that much.  The plot was supposed to be deep, but obviously it went over my head, becasue I did not get it.  It started out good, but as time when on it started making less and less sense until finally it ended horribly.  (I don’t want to give anything away, but lets just say it could have ended so much better…they forshadowed a great ending and then did’nt do it.)

Also, I might think twice about bringing small children to see this movie.  Many children under the age of 7 would be terrified by some of the scenes in this film.

Overall, I would not recommend this film.

Stargate Universe: “Air” parts 1-3 (1/5)

Well, I just finished watching the 3 part premier of Stargate Universe on hulu.  I give it 2 thumbs down.  The network went for “dark and edgy”, but they got “stupid and incoherent.”

First of all, if you do try to watch this, don’t blink, cause if you do, you will miss something and become confused….well, you are probably going to be confused either way.  The plot is crazy and jumbled.  Also, the first episode keeps jumping back and forth in time, making things worse.  The plot is devoid of logic, and it feels nothing like stargate.  In fact, its kinda an infult to stargate.

One bright spot was that there were cameos by O’Neill, Carter, and Jackson from sg1.  However Carter and Jackson’s cameos were not very long….or good.

…if you are a fan, you may remeber episode 200, where they did a parody of stargate with young, hip characters.  Thats pretty much what this series is.  (and I am not the only one to make this comparason…a dude on hulu did too)

Overall, if you are one of those people who think you are too cool for stargate and the older star-trek series, but like the new Star-Trek movie.  And if the buzzwords “dark and edgy” appeal to you, then you may like this.  But if you loved the first two stargate series, then stay away.  Just stay away.  This is not stargate, this is a bad joke.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (4.5/5)

YAY!  I Finally got to see this film, and I was not dissapointed!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is kinda like a prequel to the X-Men Trilogy that tells Wolverine’s backstory.  Its not exactly like the comics, of course, but its a good story, and thats all that counts.  Granted, I do not think it seemed to fit in with the X-Men trilogy well.  It does not condradict the originals outright, but it takes some creative liberties.  (more or less like the SW prequels ;) ) The acting is great, and the action is better.  The plot has some twist and turns, but never enough to make your head spin.  Overall, this is a great super hero movie.  My only real complaint is how they did deadpool and Gambit.  I can’t go into more detail for fear of spoilers, but I can say that deadpool was not handled right, and gambit did not have enough screen time.  (IMHO)

If you are in the mood for a super-hero movie, rent this.  If you are in the mood for an action movie, rent this.  You won’t regret it.

Push (4/5)

Push is about people with special gifts.  (Super powers)  They are all given a classification based on their powers.  Movers have telekinesis, Pushers can push thoughts into your mind, watchers can see the future, the list goes on.  A government agency known as “The Division” captures these people and tries to turn them into soldiers.

When a mover named Nick is contacted by a 13 year old watcher who claims they are  supposed to find a case containing 6 millions dollars.  Reluctant at first, Nick joins her and soon find out that they are acually after something far more valuable…the catch, she also says that they are destined to die soon.

This is a great film for anyone who loves the idea of humans with superpowers.  While the story itself is not exactly revolutionary, it still provides for a fun experience. Just don’t expect it to be completely coherent…it gets jumbled a little.  But it stays entertaining.  There is plenty of action, and the special effects are great. (For the most part)

If you like superhero movies, I think you will like this film.  Its a great way to spend an otherwise boring night.

Star Wars Retold

Ok, I had just decided to go over the films submitted for the 2009 Star Wars fan film awards.  I decided to start with the George Lucas pick award winner, and it is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time.  My throat and lungs are in pain right now from all the laughing I just did.  If you like star wars, then you need to see this.

Uber-Quick-Review – Ice Age 3: The Meltdown (4/5)

I expected this movie to suck on 12 diffrent levels.  I found it rather enjoyable.  I ate my words, which I seem to be doing in a lot of my movie reviews lately….and thats about it.  Great movie, take the kids….buy some popcorn.

Dual Review – 7 Pounds (3.5/5) and Slumdog Millionaire (4/5)

Earl reccomends a lot of movies to me.  I mean a lot.  I usually ignore him as I don’t watch that many movies and the films he suggests are things that do not sound like my kinda thing.  However I try to keep open to new things so I recently gave two of his suggestions a shot.  While I don’t think I enjoyed these movies nearly as much as he did, both were pretty good.

Uh, I am not really sure how to describe the plot to this film without giving anything away…Ok, Will Smith plays an IRS agent who wants to kill himself but first he must help 7 people in a profound way.  I can’t really tell you why he wants to kill himself or help these people, but it makes sense once you watch the movie.  The plot itself was suprisingly touching, yet not without flaws.  People, mainly the leading lady, seemed to bond with Smith’s character too fast.  It just did not feel real to me at times.  Also, the story jumps around alot.  For the first thirty minuits of the film, you will have no clue what is going on.  If you can get past that, then you can acually enjoy this film.

Slumdog millionaire is about a boy from the slums named Jamal who manages to win the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?. No one believes that an uneducated slumdog like him could know the answers to these questions, so he is arrested.  Though the story is much more than that.  It tells the story of Jamals tragic life.  More than anything, I would say this classifies as a Romance movie as most of the plot revolves around him and the love of his life, Latika.  They are seperated through most of the movie and they have a hard time.  This movie showed me a lot of the Indian culture that I might not have otherwise gotten to see.  It gets really sad at times and intense at others.  Its a pretty good movie and I would reccomend it.

Dual Review – Paul Blart: Mall Cop (4.5/5) and Bridge to Terabithia (5/5)

Paul Blart: Mall Cop (4.5/5)

This film is halarious, (it has Kevin James, what did you expect?) has a great plot, and is great for the whole family.  I loved it!  This is a must see film.  It will keep you laughing all day, and most of the next day.  I don’t have much more to say….I suppose I could mention the plot.  Kevin James is a bumbling mall cop who has to save the day. There…thats the plot…now go rent it.

Bridge to Terabithia (5/5)

While you are renting Mall cop, pick this up too.  The only reason I gave this film a 5 out of 5 is because a 6 out of 5 is mathamaticly impossible.  This movie will make you laugh at times, but it is not really a comedy.  I initally thought it was a Narnia rip-off, but it is not even close to Narnia.  If this movie does not move you in some way, you are probably not human….see this film, you shant regret it.

Dual Review: Up (5/5) and Star Trek (4/5)

Ok, I know Jake is the one who started doing the whole multiple review in one post thing.  I know and admit that I am stealing it from him.  I don’t think he will care too much, and if you do…I am sorry, but I have seen a lot of movies lately and I don’t want to write out a big post for each one of them….ok?  Alright.

Up (5/5)

See this film. Need I say more? Ok, Up is a great movie.  Children will love it, adults will love it….Pixar has done it again.  Just go see it.  Now…

Star Trek (4/5)

Star Trek is also a great movie…but its not perfect.  It felt like they were catering to the needs of the new people rather than the needs of the nerds who already love Trek.  It felt much more modern, which I did not really like.  It was full of action…shaky cam action…which gives you a headache…and the plot did not really make you think like a Star Trek film should.  Overall, it was a great movie, something that trekkies and non-trekkies would both like.

If you are a not a trekkie, you will be amazed beyond what you can expect.

If you are a trekkie, you will enjoy this film, but don’t expect it to be as good as the non-trekkies say it is.

Night at the Museum 2: Battle for the Smithsonian (2/5)

If you read my site often, you know that I am usually pretty skeptical of sequels.  Some movies deserve/need them, but often times it feels forced to me.  I’m not saying all sequels are bad, sometimes they are better than the original.  (Spiderman 2, Shrek 2, etc.)  But sometimes a movie needs to be left as one picture.  Night at the Museum is one of those films.

I origiannaly came into the movie with low expectations, yet I was still dissapointed.  The original Night at the Museum was great.  Something children can appreciate, but adults can still enjoy.  However this sequel was not like that.  Sure it had its funny moments.  There were a few times I laughed so hard I thought I was gonna choke, but those times did not come by often enough to hide the fact that this movie is completely boring.  I would spend 2 minuits laughing, 10 minuits wondering when the film would be over, 2 minuits laughing, 10 minuits wondering if I should go get more popcorn or something…and so on and so forth.

I may have hated this movie, but I must keep in mind that it was not made for me….it was made for the kids.  This movie is filled with silly little gags and is constantly moving from gag to gag, so you don’t have to think about one thing for more than 3 seconds.  Perfect for children.

Overall, I would not reccomend this movie for anyone over the age of 13, however kids will love this movie, and if you have one, I suggest letting them watch it….cause it will distract them while you go in the other room and do something productive.

They are called "Funyuns" cause they are Fun!
