The Pretender

There are pretenders among us.

Geniuses with the ability to become anyone they want to be.

In 1963, a corporation known as the Centre isolated a young pretender named Jarod and exploited his genius for their research.

Then, one day, their pretender ran away…

This is the opening narration to “The Pretender” a show that aired from 1996 to 2000 and had 2 made for TV movies based on it. The main character, Jarod has the ability to learn anything and become anything he wants to be. In every episode he takes on a different identity and a different job in order to right a wrong that has been done and then hidden.

I started watching this show recently because I knew my mom used to love it. (she has good tastes in TV shows) Now I love it. In some ways, it reminds me of quantum leap but not a lot.

The great thing about this show is that it manages to keep some light humor while still being a serious show. A large part of the comedy had to do with Jarod’s personaltiy. While, he knows practically everything, he is constantly amazed by the simple things that he never encountered while living in the centre. (such as, silly putty, ice cream, or pez dispensers.)

Why Jarod is off righting wrongs and trying to piece together who he is, he is also being chased by the centre. His old psychiatrist and another member of the centre, Miss Parker, are always after him.

This is a great show that I would recommend to anyone.

Best of all, its on Hulu! (at the time of writing the 2 seasons are on Hulu…thats 44 episodes!)

The last Mimsy (7.8/10)

The last Mimsy is about a future where ecological disaster ruins the world.  In an attempt to fix the problem, a scientist sends special “toys” into the past.  The last batch he sends comes to our present day, where 2 young children, Emma and Noah, find them.  They toys soon begin to improve the minds of the children.  Their intellect increases and they develop supernatural abilities.

I orgianally rented this movie because it is loosely based on the short story “Mimsy Were the Borogoves.”  This film is actually quite good.  The story is easy enough for younger kids to understand, yet not so predictable that you lose interest.  There are a few problems, it sets up a few things that it does not follow through with and there are a few moments where you find yourself thinking “boy, that was convenient”.  But it does not get too bad and does not really distract too much…if anything, I found it humorous.

This movie is filled with charm.  Perfect for little kids or grown adults.  This is an ideal family film.

The Wishing Game

Ok, I wanna try something a little different.  Instead of me simply writing a post, and you reading it, then maybe responding to it.  I wanna try a game.  (I know, I tried this once, but I wanna do it again.)

This is called the wishing game.  You simply make a wish, then the person below you grants it but something goes wrong.  Then, he makes a wish for the next person to grant.

Here is an example of how it works:

Person 1:

I wish for a sandwich

Person 2:

You get a witch made out of sand…she curses you.

I wish for a pony.

Person 3:

He is a big pony, and he tramples you.

I wish I ruled the world

See?  Fun(ny) right?  Ok, lets get started:

I wish I ruled the world!

Iron Man: Armored Adventures Trailer

Well, the 1st trailer for Iron Man adventures is out.

In case you did not already know, this series in going to air on nicktoons network alongside the new X-Men series. The animation style is diffrent than I expected. They are using, what looks to me like, cell shaded CG. Only this looks good, not like that MTV Spider Man series.

They seem to be taking the series in a bold new direction: In this series, Iron Man is a teenager. Though, I don’t know for sure how it will work out, it will be interesting to find out.

The trailer hints that Obadiah Stane may have been they one to kill Tony Starks father in a plane crash that gave Tony his heart problems. The trailer also more than hints that the mandarine will be in the series.

Overall, this is not what I expected, but I think that it is gonna turn out pretty good. Can’t wait for it to come out.

So glad to be wrong

I watched Mr. Monk and the Genius last night…and I was mistaken in my recent post.  I said that I was afraid that Monk had jumped the shark, but it was a great episode…one of the best I have seen.  It had a perfect balance between the comedy and the mystery.   It had me guessing the whole time.

So, here’s to more!!!  Yay Monk!

The Invasion (9.3/10)

Last night I got a chance to see this 2007 remake of Invasion of the Body snatchers.  The film started with footage of a space shuttle wreck, that spread debris all over the of the United States.  This debris, is contaminated with an entity that infects people.  It takes away their emotions and gives them the desire to spread the contamination.  Before long, most of the people in the world are infected.

The protagonist of the film, Carol Bennell, is on the run.  She is trying to save her son, who has an immunity and is the only hope to save humanity.

This movie is awesome.  The action is superb, there are plenty of scenes to keep your heart pumping.  The whole atmosphere of the film creates a sense of suspense.  You really feel like the world is being invaded.  The story is the kind that will make you think.

In many ways, this film reminds me of “I am Legend”.  Both movies feature a world where people are being infected with something that changes them.  I could go on, but I would end up spewing spoilers.  However, in this world, the infected are everywhere at everytime and they are much more intelligent.  It is, however, possible to blend in with them.

This is definitely one of the best movies I have seen in a long while.  If you are looking for an exiting film to end a friday night, this is a sure winner.

Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your username...
