Google AdSense…for Games?!

Now as you know, I hate AdSense with every fiber of life in my body. Google is good…but AdSense is pure evil. (as it ruined my last blog)

I read on gamespot that Google is planning on getting into the world of Video Game advertising. Gamespot says that Google “has developed an in-game advertising technology that allows it to insert video ads into games.”

Video ads…in games. I can see it now:

*Mario Grabs Power Star and does a flip* Woo Hoo! …. *looks at screen* I just saved a load of money on my car insurance by switching to gieco!
*Mario reaches in his pocket and pulls out a Gatorade* Saving princesses sure is thirsty work! Gatorade keeps me hydrated so that I can defeat bowser day after day!

*later mario defeats bowser and bowser is falling down a bottomless pit*
I SHOULD HAVE HAD A V8!!!!

I decided to look into it for myslef.

Bernie Stolar, advisor and director at google owned Adscape Media (an ingame advertising company) has been quoted as saying: “I’m going to be very clear right now, Google is involved in in-game advertising. I’m going to say it one more time, in case there’s any misconceptions here: in-game advertising. This is an area that Google believes will have tremendous growth over the next number of years. …”

The most disturbing thing I saw was the following paragraph from Venture Beat:

Sources close to the matter said that the company has developed an in-game advertising technology that allows it to insert video ads into games. In demos of the technology, a game character can introduce a video ad, saying something like, “And now, a word from our sponsor,” before showing a short video at the end of a sequence in a game. Since testing has been going on for some time, Google could launch the technology fairly quickly, if it so choses.

Part of me thinks (and hopes) that this may be Google’s biggest prank ever…but it does not look like it. If they do go through with this, say goodbye to suspense of disbelief. In fact, if they go through with this…I urge everyone to boycott google and everything having to do with it. We can’t let them ruin gaming.

The Dojo of Fame – Jeff Bennett

Ok, I know that a lot of people have a “Hall of Fame” on their sites but, this is not a hall it is a dojo. In this category, I will be acknowledging people who, in one way or another, make the world a better place to be a geek.

I think this is gonna be my new favroite category…I already got a lot of ideas for who I want to write about.

My first inductee to the Dojo of Fame is Jeff Bennett. Now, most of you don’t recognize his face, but I bet you recognize his voice. Jeff is a very talented voice actor. Some of my favorite of his numerous roles include:

Fantastic Four: The World’s Greatest Heroes On Marvel.com

Hey true believers! Ok, now you can watch the Fantastic Four online, thanks to Marvel.com and the britecove player. Ok, I admit…britecove is the glitchiest online player I have ever had to deal with….but maybe its just my computer…you may have better luck. Even if you don’t, its worth it for the Fantastic Four!

This is a really good series. (to my knowledge, it is the only good Fantastic Four cartoon)

(coming soon X-Men Evolution)
