Prince of Persia (2008) (6/10)

[Note: I have decided to go back to the 10 point grading scale for games, but stick to a 5 point scale for films]

When I think of Prince of Persia for the PS3, two words come to mind: unrecognized potential.  But before I venture further into this review, I think it would be best that I point out that this is the second Prince of Persia game I have ever played, and the first one is a turn based strategy game for the DS.  Therefore, I am very new to the series and cannot compare it to the older games.

That being said, this game is seriously flawed.  The bulk of gameplay consists of platforming sections that will have you transverse a massive open-world area with a magical girl named Elika.  You will be running across walls, jumping, swinging, and climbing.  This makes for an amazingly fun experience when it works. Unfortunately, it rarely works.  The controls are outrageously glitchy.  Controlling the prince is like trying to steer a car with your elbows, not pretty and very painful in the end.

When your not trying to survive the platforming sections, you can engage in combat.  As soon as you see an enemy (a surprisingly rare occurrence), the camera automatically locks onto the bad guy.  The face buttons each represent a different type of attack: Sword, Grab, Aerobatic, Magic (through Elika)  This is the best part of the game.  There are numerous combos, all of which look awesome.  Unfortunately, as you get further into the game and fight more powerful enemies, the flaws start to show.  The controls are not very responsive, and the Magic attack works far better than the rest.  Before you know it, most battles become triangle mashing minigames.

Also, it should be noted that you cannot die in this game.  No, seriously, you cannot die.  If you fall from a great height, Elika uses magic to save you.  If you are defeated by an enemy, Elika uses her magic to take you back to the last platform.  (although, the monster regains some health too)  There was one part where I was told to hurry because the room was filled with poison gas.  I stood in the middle of the room for 5 mins, and nothing happened.  Sure the prince coughed some and the screen flashed like I was taking damage, but I did not die.  It really takes away the challenge when you know there is no risk.

The story is abysmal.  The prince shows up and saves a girl who turns out to be a princess.  Her father frees an evil, and you have to travel with her to all the “fertile grounds” to turn the dark, drab areas into bright green paradises.  This somehow blocks the evil and will save the world.  The characters have no chemistry, and the relationship they build up upon through the whole game feels forced.  I just did not care about them the way I do for Cole, Nathan drake, Mario, or link.  Everything about them felt forced.

With all that said, this is NOT a bad game.  It is just an unpolished game.  Through all the flaws, you can always see the potential shining through.  You can tell exactly what the developers were going for, and the got close…it just needed some more work.  To the game’s credit the game world looks great.  I loved watching the dark areas come to life with plants and sunshine.  The level design is great, but I could not truly appreciate it due to the poor controls.

Overall, I might would recommend this game if you see it in the bargain bin or at a yard sale, or even to borrow it from a friend.  However, there are plenty of better choices out there and I would not invest much in it.

Sony E3 2010

The conference starts with the revelation that Sony has dedicated itself to bringing 3D to the home.  They are (and will continue to be) shipping 3D ready televisions and PS3s.  There will be 20 titles that support 3d by March 2011.

We see some footage of Killzone 3 and are told that it will not only be in 3d, but will be fully compatible with PlayStaion Move.

He then list games that will be available in 3d (went by way to fast, so I may have missed a few): Crisis 2, Moral Kombat: Facility, Tron, NBA 2k11, Eye pet, Tumble, The Fight: Lights Out, Grand Turismo 5, The Sly Collection

We then here more about how amazing and innovative the Playstation Move is.

Next up, a game called Sorcery.  It uses uses the umm….move remote?  As a wand to cast spells …looks MUCH cooler than it sounds.

Next we see a demo of Tiger Woods PGA tour 11 using Move.

Then we get a really cool announcement, a Move game called: Heroes on the Move. It is a crossover game that features Ratchet, Jack, Sly, Bentley, Clank, and Daxter.

We then find out that Sony has made a partnership with Coke.  Then they go on to brag about how they are so much better than the competition.  They announce that playstation move will launch here on Sept. 19th – Bundle is $99 (comes with game) , bundle with PS3 $399

We are then shown a montage of Move Games: Brunswick Bowking, The Fight Lights Out, Sports Champions, Start the Party, Sing Star, Eye Pet, Heroes on the Move, Tv Superstarts, Socom 4, Time Crisis, The Shoot, Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, Aragorn’s Quest, Tron Evolution, Sorcery

Then then show us a few commercials of the new PSP campaign featuring the most annoying kid on the face of the earth: Marcus

They show us Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (psp)

Next we get a game called InviZimals (psp) (giving us little to no explanation as to what the game is about)

We then see a trailer for a new God of War game: Ghosts of Sparta (PSP)

Now here comes a montage of PSP games including: Ace Combat, Gravity Crash, Dragonball Z, Tag Team, Hot Shots Tennis, Mod Nation Racer, Maddel 11, Patapon 3, Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake, Tetres, Eye Pet, Piyotama, Birth by Sleep, The 3rd Birthday, p3p, Valkyria 2 chronicles

They announce that their show, The Tester, which can be viewed over the PS3 is being renewed for a second season.  We then find out that if we go to Playstation Home we can view a Virtual E3, and look at the booths.

We then see some footage of Little Big Planet 2. You can make many new types of games with this one, it now includes a cutscene maker.

Then they announce Playstation Plus, which allows you to pay money for extra online perks such as discounts and early demos.

Then we see a Medal of Honor reboot.  You can see Teir 1 Operation Interviews  on their website on June 28th. We also see a video of a new map that puts you in Afganastan.  There will be a limited edition only for PS3: includes the entire game Medal of Honor: Frontline.

Then we are shown a demo of Dead Space 2.

After that….OMG ITS GLaDOS…. They are brining it to PS3, that trailer was AWESOME!!!

Next we see a video for Final Fantasy 14, its an MMO.

We are told that Mafia 2 owners get free DLC and that Assaians Creed: Brotherhood gets exclusive DLC missions on the PS3

We are then shown a big montage of PS3 Games including (but not limited to):  Socom 4, Kilzone 3, Medal of honor, Dead Space 2, Mafia 2, Madden 11, NBA 2k11, Tiger Woods, Sports Champions, Fight: Lights Out, NCAA Football 11, Eyepet, Start the Party, Little Big Planet 2, The Shoot, Echochrome 2, Heroes on the Move, Gran Turismo 5, Mod Nation Racers, Motor Storm Apocolypes, True Crime, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat, Castlevania, Dead Nation, Sorcery, DC Universe, Sly Collection, Tron, Final Fantasy 14

We then see another montage about Grand Turismo 5 (nov 2nd)

Then we see a trailer for Infamous 2.  He has been redesigned and has a new voice…which I don’t like at all…and he also seems to have Ice powers in addition to electricity now…I don’t know how I feel about that one…either way, I think it will be a good game.

Finally we see a new Twisted Metal game.  We see a lot of footage, it looks epic.  They announce a new mode: Nuke.

And thats about it. The highlights of the Sony conference.

Nintendo E3 2010

The show started out with Reggie coming onto stage.  He wasted no time in getting straight to the point: Zelda!

He showed us a teaser video that gave us the title for the new game: SKYWARD SWORD!!!!

We were then shown a video of Mr. Miyamoto talking about how the new game will control.  He then came on screen and gave us a demo.  The sword control looks awesome!  There is 1:1 accuracy in the sword attacks. Also, he demonstrated how certain enemies can only be defeated with certain sword strikes.  The sword beam makes a reappearance.  By holding the sword to the sky, then slashing down quickly, one can fire the sword beam  He demoed many of link’s items, including Bow, Slingshot, bombs, and a new item called a beetle, it is a bug that players can fly around to pick up items, and an awesome whip.  They had some difficulty with some of the items, particularly the bow, something they blamed on interference.  However, it was still awesome!

Then he hit us with the bad news, it has been delayed until 2011.

They then mention a wii exclusive version of NBA Jam.

Next, we see a trailer for Mario Sports Mix (Coming 2011)  It contains many sports such as volleyball, dodgeball, and basketball. Honestly, I was not too impressed…but I am not a sports guy.

Next we see Wii Party, which looks like Mario Party but with Miis.

We then see a trailer for Just Dance 2.

Then they announce some good news for RPG fans, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (DS).  I do not know anything about the series but the trailer looked good.

From there they move on to something amazing, A REMAKE OF GOLDENEYE FOR THE WII!  I love the original, and while the graphics for the new one do not look much better than the original, it still promises to be a great game.

We then see some footage of Epic Mickey, including some impressive 2d cut-scenes.  They demonstrate how to use the Thinner and Paint features, which did not impress me as much as I excerpted they would…but they did not show me enough to make a real judgment.  They demonstrated that jumping into a movie screen takes you to side scrolling levels (this is what I was waiting for!)  We see a bit of the Steamboat Willey level, then the video ends.

Next, we get another big announcement, a new Kirby game for the Wii! Kirby: Epic Yarn it is a sweet 2d sidecroller, that stars Kirby..but he is an outline made out of yarn?  In the trailer we see him pulling things and throwing then around with his Yarn, including the screen.  It is a really cute looking game, but I have no doubt that it will be just as epic as its title claims.  (Coming this fall)

Next we see a video of Dragon Quest IX, a multiplayer DS game set to debut on July 11th.

Next we see some awesome footage of Metroid: Other M, set for release on Aug 31st

We then get a new Donkey Kong Game for the Wii! Donkey Kong Country Returns is a great looking sidescroller.  I admit, I have never been a big fan of Donkey Kong, but this looks great!

The it happens: They move on to the Nintendo 3DS – The Top screen is 3d; The botton screen touch screen.  There is a swich that allows you to toggle the strength of the 3d effect, and even turn it off.  Also there is an Analog slide pad above the Dpad.  It is fully compatible with the DSi and can take photos in 3D.  Soon you will be able to buy 3D movies to watch on it, and new new hardware allows for Better Graphics.

The first launch title they announce for the 3DS? Kid Icarus: Uprising!  It looks amazing, and it is great to see a Kid Icarus game in the works.

They then mention that  Nintendogs + Cats is in the works

We then see a sideshow of a bunch of cool games coming to the 3DS.  The titles went by too fast for me to catch them all, but I did see: Mario Kart, Pilotwings, Animal Crossing, Batman, Resident Evil, and Assassins Creed.

And that was it.  The end of the best E3 confrence ever!

BUT WAIT!  THERE’S MORE!

They announced a few new games for the 3DS after the conference including: Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and a new Paper Mario!   (I am so excited about the zelda one I can’t explain it!)

Ubisoft E3 2010

Ubisoft also had a really good confrence.  Kinda…the beginning was good, the middle was…something…and the end was great.  Here is a rundown of what went on:

The show opened with live gameplay of Children of Eden.  From what we saw, it looked like a freaky 3d version of bit.trip.  It uses Kinect and is a 360 exclusive.

Next we saw a trailer and some footage of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.  There is going to be horse-fighting, and multiplayer.  It will in stores on November 16th.

Next Shawn White comes out to talk to us about his new game: Shawn White…skateboarding?  Apparently he skateboards too!  The plot to this game is that an evil organization known as “the ministry” has outlawed skatebording, so you have to skateboard to…make tree’s grow, and bring beauty into the world…or something like that…this game looks kinda like a cross between Tony Hawk and De Blob…and not in a good way.

Then…well, I started having techinical difficulties, but from what I gathered they are releasing a new Lazertag-type game.  But its not a video-game, its a real lazertag-type set…

But then we see Innergy.  It is a “game” that uses a knock-off of the Wii Vitality sensor to help you relax…yeah…and thats pretty much it…it shows some pretty cartoony graphics and measures how relaxed you feel…

Then they start taking about Videogames again with Fitness Evolved…just like at the Microsoft confrence…

Now they start talking about a Wii exclusive…Rabbids: Travel in Time…I think the title is self-expiratory…

Next we see gameplay of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.  This installment will feature 4-player co-op.

Then we get to see a trailer and gameplay footage for Driver: San Fransisco.  Including the new “Shift” feature that allows you to instantly take control of any car you see.  This actually looks like a really good game to me.

Next we see a teaser-trailer for Project: Dust (working title) it seems to be about a tribe of people who can manipulate the elements by doing group dances…

Then we get a BIG announcement: A new Rayman game!  It is a 2d Platformer called Rayman: Origins.  It is being developed by an unusually small team. (he said only 5 people worked on it)

Next they announce ManiaPlanet: A game-making type game.  Basically, has three studios that allow you to make either a shooter (shootmania), a racer (racemania), or an RPG (questmania) and share them with people around the world.

The wrap-up the conference with the people from “This is it” dancing to “Beat it” to announce a new Michal Jackson game.

Microsoft E3 2010

Ok, here is a quick rundown of what happened at Microsoft’s Conference:

I had a little technical difficulty at first, but I came in just in time to see the end of a trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising.  From what I have seen the selling point of this game seems to be the ability to cut anything in half from any angle using a sword.  There was a demo of a watermelon being accurately sliced…mmmm….watermelons…

Phil Spencer then came out to tell us that the Xbox is the best and use the word “blockbuster” a million times.

We were then shown 4-player co-op gameplay of the new Gears of War game.  After the trailer they mentioned a new mode, Beast, but we were given no details about it.

Next, we got to see a trailer for Fabel 3, it looked really cool.

Cryek is making a game: Codename Kingdoms…we were given a brief trailer which just showed people in warrior costumes standing there and blood dripping…we did not get much information about the game…

What time is it? Haloz Time! We see some gameplay…it looks really cool…really, really, cool…like, cool enough to make me envious of Xbox owners…but the gameplay footage ends with a space battle.  Correct me if I am mistaken, but I think Space Combat is new to Reach.  (not sure, as I have only played halo multilayer)

A guy then shows us Kinect (Formally Known as Project Natal) he uses it to watch a move (alice in wonderland) and play some music.  He does it using hand gestures, and voice commands (like “Xbox pause”), which is pretty cool.

A lady then show how Kinect can be used as a videophone by chatting with her twin (this is supposed to be compatible with windows live messenger)  They demonstrate that they can watch a film together by watching the Last Airbender trailer.  They demonstrate how the camera tracks their movements to keep them in the center of the screen.  Finally the confrence ends with a voice command.

Xbox is teaming up with ESPN to provide us with sports stuff (live games and trivia), and gold members get it with no extra charge

We then see a bunch of Kinetic Games:

-Kinectimals (spelling?) basicly it is a pet simulator with over 40 animals.  They demonstrate it by bringing an overly-cute girl to play with her virtual baby tiget, skittles….It was so sweet, I fell into a sugar coma…

-Next up, Kinect Sports incuding: soccer, bowling, ping pong, boxing, volleyball, and more

-Kinect Joy Ride – it’s a racing game, with stunts and stuff

-Kinect Adventures – We saw a moving obstaclel course and a water rafting demo…kinda hard to explain, it looks pretty good.  Basically, you follow a path and try to move around and pick up tokens while avoiding obstacles…

-and Ubisoft one – Fitness Evolved, pretty self explanatory.  It tracks your movements and gives you a wide range of different workouts, looks about as good as a fitness game can get

-and Harmonix Game – Dance Central…a game about busting some fly moves…inculdes “break it down mode” that teaches you how to dance.  Looks really fun to me, but I like dancing.

Kinect Release Date is announced : Novemver 4th – with more than 15 launce titles

then they show us a trailer for…OMG IT’S A STAR WARS GAME…OMG!!!…coming 2011…Kinect + The Force + Lightsabers =  Awesome!

Next we see Fozza Motorsport for the Kinect.

They now announce a redesign of the  Xbox 360. Its smaller, sleeker, blacker, and cooler.  It has built in wi-fi and is the same price ($299)  It ships today and should be in stores next week.  They then give everyone in the audience one of the new Xboxes.

And the show is over.

Overall, it was a great confrence for Microsoft.  They focused on Kinect a little too much for me (I was not too interested in most of its games) but it was still a great show.

E3 2010 Preview – What I want to see! (Unconfirmed)

The Top 5 Things I want to see most that have not been confirmed to be at E3 2010:

Star Fox Wii

Again, there are plenty of rumors that this game will be at E3, but there are always rumors that this game will be at E3.  If they could pull off another Star Fox 64, then it would be amazing. Just imagine holding the wiimote sideways, and using it to pilot an Arwing.  Sends chills down your spine, right?

Battlefront 3

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am huge fan of Star Wars.  However, I do not like the directions the Star Wars game have taken lately.  The last truly amazing Star Wars game I played was Battlefront 2 (FTU was pretty good in its on right, but not amazing)  The next installment of the Battlefront Franchise has swapped hands quite a few times and seems to have vanished.  But there are rumors that it may appear at E3!  With any luck this game shall pull though.

Uncharted 3

This game has pretty much been confirmed, but there is no telling if we will see it at E3.  The first Uncharted game was unbelievable, and the second is one of the best game I have ever played.  There will be a sequel, and it will be awesome.  The question is, when?

Ocarina of Time: Master Quest DS

I am fully aware that this one sounds a little weird.  But the way I see it, if they could port Mario 64 to the Nintendo DS, why can’t they do it for OOT?  The game could appear on the top screen, with HUD information and Item Selection on the touch screen.  I honestly think it could work. And wouldn’t you like to be able to play OOT from anywhere?  I know it won’t happen, but a guy can dream, can’t he?

New Nintendo IP

More than anything, I want Nintendo to surprise me.  I want to see a completely new game, filled with the imagination and magic that only Ninendo can bring.  I want a new cast of lovable characters who can take their rightful place alongside Mario and Link as gaming royalty.
